  22. LightWave 4.0 for the PC has just begun shipping...it is currently still a
  23. "work-in-progress" with many things that need to fixed and added.  It has a
  24. list price of $995 and will probably sell for about $850 or so on the street.
  25. Anyone who purchases the current "Pre-Release" version will receive the 
  26. final release for free.  There is no hardware required to run LightWave 4.0
  27. for the PC other than an adequate PC system...in the past though, when
  28. LightWave was only available for the Amiga, you needed a Video Toaster to
  29. run LightWave. (The Video Toaster is a magical device that does everything
  30. except make toast. =) )

  35. The only essentials for running LightWave on a PC are: 486 or Pentium CPU,
  36. (it MAY run on a 386 but you wouldn't like it!) lots of memory, (32megs will
  37. be adequate) lots of storage, (at least 1gig to store rendered images)
  38. decent S-VGA display, (something like 1024x768 with a minimum of 256 colors)
  39. CD-Rom drive, (needed to access example stuff that comes on CD) and you need
  40. at least Windows 3.11 or Windows NT 3.5 (running LightWave under NT
  41. environment will increase performance significantly but comes with a hefty
  42. cost in memory and storage...you'll lose 12megs of RAM and 80+megs of hard
  43. drive storage just by installing and running Windows NT, but it seems to be
  44. worth it)

  46. This is all posted off the top of my head from stuff I've here and on the LW
  47. mailing list....I don't have LightWave for the PC yet, nor do I have a PC
  48. yet, but I've been researching the subject thoroughly and will be purchasing
  49. a system very soon. (along with LW 4.0 for PC)

  51. LightWave is far superior to anything else out there, except for maybe the
  52. stuff that's used in Hollywood, but if you've got a couple hundred grand to
  53. drop on CGI then there's not much else to say.....  =)
